Question of the Month

December 1 question -
In your writing, what stresses you the most? What delights you?
Wringing my hands at the moment trying to decide what stresses me the most in my writing. I believe it is when I write the scene that I see clearly in my head, but the words on the paper do not convey the emotion I want readers to feel. Writing and re-writing it to be more powerful, more exciting, more romantic, more imaginative and not feeling satisfied with the result is stressful.

I am delighted, after putting away the ms for several weeks, my story reads better than I thought!

It's too late to ask now, but for future promotions, I wonder about paying for ads for my books during the fourth quarter of the year and especially during this crazy Black Friday-Cyber Monday weekend. Do you think people are buying books during that time or will my ads just get lost in the noise? When is the time to sell romance novels or mysteries? When is the time to sell children's chapter books?
I have heard people buy books in January because many have received new reading devices like Kindle, Nook, cell phones. Is there any truth to this?
And, finally, I am a Scrooge when it comes to paying to advertise a 99 cent book. I know I may gain some buzz for the book, but I have not seen reviews added to my page. Ewww, I just had a sickening realization, maybe the readers hated it and didn't want to say anything to hurt my feelings.

Please leave a comment below with your thoughts on when, or if, to pay for ads. Thank you!

I've found most ads don't work. Romance - if it's a fun romance - makes for a good sell in May-June as a beach read. Kids' picture books are good anytime but leading up to Christmas is good as people are buying them as gifts.

Thanks for the tips. Ads usually help amazon or facebook and not the author? Cynical, aren't I?

I'm so glad you visited my blog. I usually get around to blogs I visited mostly during #IWSG but as a co-host, I had assigned duties, missed my other folks. Interesting about the clutter of Black Friday. I'm curious what your readers have to say.

Hi Jacqui, Thanks for stopping in. I am late getting posted because we are on a road trip. So I hope readers will find me and share their experiences with ads and book marketing. Happy extended IWSG Day and thank you for co-hosting.

It's hard when we see something in our mind but can't get it quite right when we write it. Sorry I don't kow the answer to your question.

I'm pleased to say that by the time your book gets to publication, your words flow smoothly and the emotion comes through clearly.

Nope, a scene is always way better in my head than on the paper.
I'm sure some people spend their iTunes cards on books after Christmas.

I love that feeling when the story isn't half bad after all!
I've never done ads so I'm afraid I'm of no help there!

As someone who has bought countless books for Christmas for members of my family, I'm guessing that mid-to-late November is a good time to buy books, especially for children. I find it stressful when the right words don't come. I can see everything vividly in my mind, but the words too often are dull or cliched. Revise, revise, revise! When I get it right, I feel so good. Merry Christmas to you ~ Have fun celebrating with your loved ones, J.Q.

I don't know if anybody really has an answer! Stay tuned.

J.Q. Rose said...

That is good to know!

J.Q. Rose said...

Exactly! That's what I wanted to say, Alex. Thank you.

J.Q. Rose said...

LOL--yes, a great feeling. Are you planning to use ads in the future?

J.Q. Rose said...

I believe books make thoughtful gifts for those who enjoy reading. With deliveries taking so long these days, I can't delay shouting about giving books. Revise, revise, revise and then do it again! LOL. Thank you.

I love it when I go back and the story reads better than I thought! Less editing! ;)

J.Q. Rose said...

So true. Less editing is always good!

I've not paid for adds, J. Q. And I've just started doing 99 Cent sales. Based on the reviews, which you pointed out for TAINTED, it was worth it. I'm doing that this month with COMPROMISE. Fingers crossed.
And yes, it is really cool to pick up the book after you've put it to rest for a while before final edits to find, oh, it's pretty good. Love your post and I shared. :)

Putting aside a manuscript then reading it can be very surprising, as you discovered. Sometimes we're too close. Space away helps. Happy Holidays.
