October Question
What do you consider the best characteristics of your favorite genre?

Before writing an answer to the question, I decided to look up the meaning of genre. The Vista Higher Learning website concludes there are 5 types of genre--Fiction with many sub-genres, nonfiction, drama, poetry and folk tale. Does the definition surprise you?

My favorite genre to read is mystery. The characteristics I like in mysteries are  putting together all of the pieces of the puzzle to solve the mystery, the constant weighing of evidence to prove who-dun-it, the exciting scenes, but not resulting in a lot of blood and guts and the twist at the end, a complete surprise if the author has done his/her job correctly.

I love the variety in mysteries--those subgenres--historical, romance, time-travel, fantasy and beyond. But as one experienced author exclaimed one day, "Isn't every book a mystery? We don't know the ending so we read to discover it."

I am anxious to visit other participating bloggers to find out their favorite genres and to receive comments below about your favorites too.

Well, that's true! We don't know how they end. Although I don't have the brain-twist power to write mystery.

I love mysteries too. I'd like to start a mystery series--maybe with a touch of magic--after I finish the fantasy series I'm working on.

I agree. I love mysteries too! Keeps my brain occupied like I want it to :D

@Alex--I'm sure you could write a mystery in space!
@Natalie--Yes, you can add anything to a mystery. I have a murder mystery with a ghost and a paranormal murder mystery. So much fun to play with them.
@Damyanti--Maybe keeping my brain occupied is why I'm drawn to mysteries. Good observation.

I love mystery too. I especially like it when I can't figure out the ending.

I like those aspects of mysteries as well. :)

I do enjoy mysteries, though I've never been able to write one myself. Darn characters always like to give the big reveals away.

I love that picture!!!!! Priceless.
You can't beat a good mystery for sure.
I like your blog layout.

So true, J.Q. We don't, or shouldn't, know the end of the story. I love mysteries. But I can't read graphic violence. Great post. Happy Halloween to you too! Happy IWSG day!

Yes, I think all stories have a bit of mystery in them. :-)

The older I get, the more drawn to mystery (or elements) I am. It's fun to figure things out and see where everything leads.

@Joylene--thanks.
@Yvonne--thank you for stopping in.
@Loni--LOL
@Diane--we can't all be mystery authors!
@Sandra--thanks for the compliments.
@Victoria--No graphic violence for sure. That's why I like cozies.
@emaginette--thanks
@Tonja--Do you think you like them now because you are older? Hmmm...that's an interesting observation.
