Snowbirds are in Florida enjoying warm sunshine and gentle breezes. So I am sharing an excerpt from Terror on Sunshine Boulevard, a story about a snowbirding couple from Michigan who are lucky to spend their winters in Florida participating in all the fun activities in a community of snowbirds.

But not so much fun this winter because the season is filled with terror, death and mystery.

BACK OF THE BOOK:  Rescuing a naked woman lying in a geranium bed? Investigating mysterious murders Not the usual calls for first responder Jim Hart. He expects slip and fall accidents or low blood pressure emergencies in his retirement community of Citrus Ridge Senior Community and Golf Resort. The ghastly crime scenes turn the wintertime fun into a terrifying season of death and mystery when the authorities cannot track down the predator responsible.

Jim and his wife Gloria could escape the horror and grief by returning to their northern home, but concern for their friends and residents keep them in Florida. With the entire community in a dither over the deaths, the Harts participate in the normal winter activities of golfing, dancing, and pool parties with their friends to distract them from the sadness and loss.

Can Jim and Gloria work with the authorities to discover who or what is killing the seniors on Sunshine Boulevard and stop the increasing body count?

EXCERPT: Terror on Sunshine Boulevard by J.Q. Rose

A few nights later, Mr. Tweeble woke up with a start when his dog Jingles began barking loud enough to wake him even if he wasn’t wearing his hearing aids.

Jingles, the star, in Terror On Sunshine Boulevard.

“Jingles! Jingles! Hush up, will you? It’s three o’clock in the morning. You’re going to wake the neighborhood with your barking.”

He remembered Jingles barking and whining like that when he drove his electric scooter near George McConnell’s house that afternoon. He had finally picked up the feisty terrier and put him on his lap to join the other curiosity seekers near the house. The dog jumped off and raced the other way until he was brought up short on his leash and howled until his master turned the cart around and left the area.

Jingles’ pitiful yowling broke into Mr. Tweeble’s memory.

Fearing his dog was sick, Mr. Tweeble rolled himself out of bed, fumbled putting on his glasses, and shuffled into the kitchen. Using the night light in the hood vent over the old stove to see the dog, he discovered the animal scampering back and forth near the back door.

“Jingles, come ‘ere, boy. Are you sick?” Mr. Tweeble picked him up and gently held the dog close to his chest. He switched on the ceiling light and studied the precious face he dearly loved. He checked Jingles’ brown ears and his brown and white furry body for any injuries and then cradled him to his rotund belly.

“It’s all right, little guy. Come on. Come on to bed with me. You must want to go out to chase a rabbit, eh?” As he slowly shuffled his way back to his bedroom with the dog, he wondered what was wrong. Mr. Tweeble made a mental note to check behind the couch for an “accident” in the morning.

He lay down on the rumpled bed and enfolded the trembling dog in his arms. Suddenly Jingles wriggled free and sprang up barking non-stop. He leaped from the bed and raced out of the room. A flash of searing yellow light filled the room blinding Mr. Tweeble, and the smell of his own scorched flesh burned his nostrils.

SPRING BREAK: Paradise Just 20 Minutes Away by JQ Rose

Paradise just 20 minutes away.

Hello and welcome to the Focused on Story Blog!

We've been cooped up for a year, and I am ready to get out of the house and see some sites. How about you?

Come with me to an amazing place just 20 minutes from us; I forgot I was near my neighborhood!

My dear brother-in-law, Terry, discovered this accommodation while biking last week, so he had to share this unique spot on the Gulf of Mexico with his friends, GT and me. What a gem! Not only did the actual place lift my spirits, but the owner of the Captain's House, Yann, was a delight to meet.

First, we enjoyed a delicious dinner in the garden at his restaurant, the Silver Dolphin. Then Terry took us on a three-minute drive to see the Captain's House. After we rounded the curve, the large house, located in a quiet location, loomed into view.

Greetings from the Captain's House

We parked the cars in the small parking area and began moving toward the house. Yann spotted us through the eye of the security camera and walked out to join us. This hale and hardy gentleman was quite dapper in his captain's hat, floral shirt and shorts. A white VanDyk beard outlined his smiling mouth. Terry explained he was bringing us over to see the magnificent works of art adorning the small beach next to the channel.

Yann is an interesting fellow. He came to the USA when he was 11 years old from Morocco. He has made a contribution to this country through his energy and vision. Yann has been in the hospitality business for a long time in various locations. When he and his wife settled in Hernando Beach, Florida, a couple of years ago, he opened his 13th restaurant! He also purchased an existing motel, Hernando Beach Motel, and then renovated the house into a magnificent hotel on the channel that leads to the gulf.

A mermaid bathing in the sunshine

The winged horse

Our host led us past the "beach" overlooking the channel. We oohed and awed at the amazing sculptures and artwork along the way. A large seating area on a deck, a gorgeous boat for guests' tours and a surprising boat-shaped swimming pool included the playground for guests.

The back of the house impressed with the wide steps sweeping up toward the beautifully designed structure, originally a home built in 1993 for the county judge.

The gracious back door of the Captain's House

We entered the house through the kitchen door adjacent to a lovely outdoor dining area. Many of the guests prepare their meals in the kitchen. It's a great way to enjoy camaraderie with the other guests and make new friends.
The reclaimed sea horse

This adorable sea horse was found 23 miles out in the gulf. Its tail was missing; you can imagine the shape it was in. This restored piece of art was originally created in the mid-1800s. A local artist repaired and brought it back to life to the delight of those preparing meals in the roomy kitchen.

Just me with my pal, Einstein

The writer in me could not resist having my picture taken next to Einstein and his stack of books in the "exercise" room

Sunset over the Gulf of Mexico

What a perfect way to end the tour, watching the sun set over the gulf.

Note: Hernando Beach does not have a beach. As the legend goes, when the developer in the 60s wanted to attract property buyers from up north, he used clever names for his planned developments to grab their attention. Of course, a beach to those dealing with snow, ice and gray skies sounded pretty good, so northerners made the trek south to the blue skies and warm sunshine. Even if there is no true beach in Hernando Beach, the visitors were thrilled with the gulf and the opportunities to fish and participate in water sports in winter.

The Five W's in Terror on Sunshine Boulevard by J.Q. Rose

The 5 W's in Story
The 5 W's of a story are who, what, where, when and why (and sometimes How is included if it doesn't contain any spoilers.) These important W's make up the skeleton or the bones of a story. This series has been a hit with readers.

The Five W's in Terror on Sunshine Boulevard by J.Q. Rose
Originally appeared on Ellen Jacobson's blog, the Cynical Sailor and His Salty Sidekick

Today I thought I'd take a turn to share the 5 W's of one of my mysteries, Terror on Sunshine Boulevard, a touch of the paranormal with a lot of humor set in a Florida retirement community.

That makes the perfect segue to the WHERE in Terror on Sunshine Boulevard--The action takes place at the Citrus Ridge Senior Community and Golf Resort--a beautiful park filled with manufactured homes, a community center, golf course, tennis, pickleball, horseshoes, bocci ball, heated pool and a club for every interest imaginable.

WHO--The main characters are Jim and Gloria Hart, snowbirds from Michigan, who spend their winters at Citrus Ridge meeting friends and joining in the social activities.

Jim and Gloria retired after selling their hardware store in Michigan. Jim was a volunteer fireman, so when he moved into the community, he became a volunteer first responder and eventually the co-captain of the Citrus Ridge first responders squad. Because the volunteers live in the park, they are key to saving many lives due to their quick response.

WHEN--Contemporary

WHAT--The members of the first responder squad are accustomed to being called to seniors' homes for slip and fall accidents or high blood pressure issues, but Jim has never been called to the homes of so many folks dying of unknown causes.

WHY--So if seniors are dying every day, the question is why? What is killing them? A virus, deadly air quality, bad water, a treacherous mad man?

Why don't Jim and Gloria head back north and get out of there? (If any of you have endured or are enduring winter storms, icy roads, blizzards, you may understand why Jim and Gloria want to stay in warm, tropical Florida. !!!)

As co-captain of the squad, Jim is drawn into the police investigations.  Gloria feels responsible for so many of her senior friends who rely on her for assistance. They both know if they went home to Michigan they would only be miserable worrying about their Florida friends and feeling guilty for abandoning their community in crisis. Wouldn't you?

HOW-- I can't tell you how the cause of so many deaths is solved. You knew I wouldn't, didn't you? That would ruin the fun of reading Terror on Sunshine Boulevard.

Travelogue: Taking a Break at the Sponge Capital of the USA--Tarpon Springs, Florida

Hello and welcome. And shall I say hello to spring yet? I hope you are some of the fortunate folks who are warming up this week.

Congratulations to Karen Walker! Last week was Read an eBook week sponsored by Smashwords.com. Karen won her choice of my e-books listed on the My Books-Fiction and Non-fiction page of this blog in the tab above.  Did you get to read an eBook last week?
I started a fun paranormal mystery,  Act of Abduction, by Brainerd and Fraser, and enjoying it. Truly an escape from everyday life.

We took a break from the usual everday activities when our daughter and her family visited last week. We took them to Tarpon Springs, Florida, well-known for its sponge business and Greek culture influences. In fact according to Wikipedia, Tarpon Springs has the highest percentage of Greek Americans of any city in the US. The scenic waterways in the area flow into the Gulf of Mexico where sponge divers harvest sponges all along the west coast of Florida.

We walked along the docks in the historic district filled with tourist shops and Greek restaurants and bakeries. (Yes, we stopped for some of their delicious treats in the afternoon. I wish I had taken a picture of the cakes we enjoyed. They were  beautiful as well as tasty. I had the plain kok (pronounced coke) which is NOT plain. Two small sponge cakes filled with custard and frosted with chocolate icing. MMMM, yummy! Take a peek at them and get the recipe at the Taste of My Life site.)

Many fishing boats and sponging boats docked in the harbor area.
Gorgeous day to be there.

Laughed at a boat tow away zone sign. Usually a vehicle tow away zone.

An original sponge boat circa 1933

Diver with his vintage water tight diving suit. He gets in and out of it using soap and water.

Diver with our nine year old grandson and me

Diver brought up a sponge from the bottom of the springs area

Clambering on board. Diver has to add 172 pounds of gear to his weight in order to keep him on the bottom of the sea floor..

I love pelicans. Maybe even more than flamingos. They were everywhere.
Hope you enjoyed the tour. Think of Tarpon Springs when you use your sponge. There are so many kinds of sponges. It was a real education for us.

Do you use a sponge? a natural sponge from the bottom of the sea? Leave a comment below and let us know how you use it. Thanks.

Presidents Day USA, Florida, Writers Chatroom Writers Challenge

Mt. Rushmore--Image courtesy of samandale / FreeDigitalPhotos.net
Presidents Day is today, February 17, 2014. Officially it is known as George Washington's birthday, (which is actually February 22, but the federal government wanted a 3 day weekend, so the Monday close to his birthday is his day now.)

Growing up in central Illinois, the Land of Lincoln, I think Abe Lincoln's February birthday on the 12th gets overlooked. Do you share a birthday close to a holiday? Like my aunt's birthday was December 24, so she usually got a Christmas gift OR a birthday gift or ONE gift to cover both the holiday and her birthday. I always felt bad for her. Or how about the person who was born on December 31? One party for New Years AND her birthday just doesn't seem fair.

I doubt Abe is bothered by the federal birthday holiday for George. Afterall most folks call it President's Day  recognizing those who served as presidents or at least honoring the office of the President of the USA.

My brother-in-law visited over the weekend. He was happy to get out of the freezing Northern regions of the USA and kind of warm up in Florida. We had cold nights and mid 60's days while he was here. The day we took him to the airport, it finally hit the 70's and was a gorgeous day. Isn't that the way it goes? We had a great time together and enjoyed giving him a glimpse of the snowbird life.

Hopefully a few of these photos will warm up your fingers and toes in the snowy areas of the country.

I've been pretty faithful in working on my Work in Progress during the Writers Chatroom Writers Challenge of writing 1500 words a day, well that is, until this long weekend... I have not reached the 1500 words a day, but I'm still happy to have revised scenes and then work on from there. Every hundred words means I have more of the story down than I had at the beginning of the month. Plus I am finding my way now that I have written the 15th chapter. It's exciting to see the story take shape.
Go to the TWC discussion board/forum for more info on the TWC Writers Challenge.

Wishing you all a fantastic week! What are you all up to this week?

Six More Weeks of Winter Weather, This Week, and Free E-book

Here's a cup of coffee to warm you up! Sounds like there will be six more weeks of winter weather.
Actually I am sitting here at the laptop with iced tea because in Florida it's 80 degrees. Okay, don't throw rotten tomatoes at me. I am thrilled to be a snowbird and in fact, my first mystery novella is a story about snowbirds. Some of you may recall Sunshine Boulevard. It's a fun read to escape with whether it's 80 degrees or 0 degrees. Check out the video below for you viewing pleasure...!!
