What's in the Future for Planes, Cars, Computers, and Books?

"The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams." This quote is one of my favorites. I discovered it when I was looking for quotes to accompany chapters in my inspirational and empowering book for girls, Girls Succeed! Stories Behind the Careers of Successful Women.
Girls Succeed! by J.Q. Rose

Looking to the future is not just for girls, but for everyone no matter their age. I'm excited about what's happening in the future. Recently I've come across some interesting ideas that may happen in the days and years ahead.

✤Airplane pilots will fly planes using no joy stick at all. Instead they will use a laser beam reflected in their eyes, so when they read the instruments (screens), their eyes will direct the instructions to the plane. Some day the plane will talk back to the pilot too!

Drivers in the future will not have to drive the roads, but rather just get in the vehicle (who knows what design the cars will have) and give the destination and off they will go. On the ground or in the air. Yes, flying cars are in the works now.
Space flight in the future

Space travel will be as common as taking a train or bus to your desired location, but your view out the window will be the galaxy close-up and personal.

Computers are always changing. Soon the mechanical hard drive will be a dinosaur. The preference now is the Solid State Drive. Looking into the future, however, nitrogen will take over the job of what we know as hard drives. I must confess I googled this idea and articles came up about it, but frankly, I had no interest in figuring out all the computer-speak terminology to explain it. Check out the link below to this article.

Since you're on an author's blog, of course we have to look into the future for books.

According to a Market Watch report entitled Forget e-books, the audiobooks are the future. In fact in an array of genres like romance novels, thrillers, self-help and business books, audio books are out-selling the written word books 4 to 1. The author cites the choice for audiobooks is because readers prefer the audio experience to text. I know when I listened to my first audiobook, it reminded me of the old radio shows people listened to in the heyday of radio like The Green Hornet and Ronald Reagan's General Electric Theater. The experience is like sitting in a seat at a play, but no actors on stage. I especially enjoy imagining the settings and characters like I do when I read a book.

The author pointed out that "text is still king," but in the future?

Remember when Kindle and Nook came out as devices for reading ebooks? They were touted as the future, but now people are reading ebooks and listening to audiobooks on smartphones and tablets. The Nook is practically out of business and amazon is trying to sell Kindle as a tablet style device.

Articles also touted a plan similar to Netflix for books. Pay your monthly fee and have unlimited numbers of fictional novels and non-fiction works to read. Going beyond that is the idea of eventually making ebooks available in the cloud storage for anyone to access.

What ideas for the future have you seen either for publishing or for enhancing our lives in the future? It's fun to dream about the possibilities.

Hey, JQ. Oh my! Some of these ideas are frightening. The driverless car is here and it scares me almost to death. I like to be in control. Even when my husband is driving, I have to work to relax and let him do it. And he's a good driver. Don't see me getting in one of those driverless cars anytime soon.

The laser beam thing for pilots seems dangerous. Is the laser going into or out of their eyes? No to space travel, too.

I guess I'm just a woman for the 20th & 21st centuries. Don't want to go back and don't want to go forward. As to books, I just pray they don't change so fast I'm unable to keep up. Great post. I shared. :)

I agree whole-heartedly with Marsha. Don't like the idea of a laser for an airplane pilot. Maybe a flying car...maybe.

I can recall when I was in high school, someone came in to give us a talk about the "future" of offices and claimed we'd have an instrument to where all we'd do is push a button and it'd reach our home, tell our refrigerator to shove the frozen roast into the oven, and bake it and have it ready for when we arrived.

We laughed and rolled our eyes, but here I am living it.

A lot of these ideas I simply don't care for, though. I want to be in command, not some machine. Besides, we lose a part of ourselves when we do that. We lose our intellect, our love of challenges and feeling of accomplishments when we master skills.

Too much like the Borg for me!

Hi Marsha, I might try a driverless car around Disney World, but as far as traveling from FL to MI, I think I'll pass until ALL the bugs are worked out on them. Same with flying cars. Well, no, probably not in my future though. Can you imagine a traffic jam up in the air??? wow...You're right that things change too quickly. We just have to be flexible and keep on learning. Thanks for your input on this topic and for sharing!

Hi MM--I agree we lose a piece of ourselves when we rely on machines to do our thinking and our chores! So many of the things in the Jetsons TV series, remember that?--have come true now in this age and that show was on in the early '60's. !!

The laser question--I'm not exactly how the pilot uses his eyes to fly the plane but the laser is not directly shining in his eye. They said it was reflection. As per usual, I don't get all that scientific stuff. I'll have to have my grandsons explain it to me!!

The driverless car sounds interesting. I'd like to see that happen sometime.

I agree. I prefer audio books. Especially when reading some of the classics. Recently I read Jane Eyre and I couldn't get into it. So I bought the audio and hearing the voice with the slight english accent helped tremendously and I was able to enjoy the book. Your inspiring book for women and careers sounds like a really great resource. I also love your favorite quote! Thank you so much. Have a great rest of your day.

Hi Gina, Like Marsha mentioned, there are driverless cars in existence, but more experimental than practical uses. It won't be long when you can take your knitting (?)along to while "driving" your car. Thanks for stopping in.

Thank you, Erika. I've found the narrator in the audiobook can make a positive or negative experience for the listener. I began listening to an author's book I love, but the narrator just didn't fit my image of the story and had to quit. Glad to hear the narrator for Jane Eyre was excellent and increased your appreciation of the story. Thanks for coming by and leaving a comment.

Sometimes when a company has a peek period of activity, hiring temporary workers to fill their need, they rent an extra quantity of these devices. That way the added workers can have access to necessary programs and applications.
